The first ‘All Flights, Everywhere!’ app was a tremendous success. Kotikan and Skyscanner were enthusiastic to make Version 2 even better...
The updated app was to include features that would bring the full flexibility of the website to Version 2 and provide an optimised experience for iPad users. The app would allow users to browse flights on a wide range of routes over a variable period of time. This would help those who could be flexible about when they travel to find a great deal.
Making use of the specific opportunities available to the mobile platform was also a major ambition for Version 2. The updated app was to include exciting features which would achieve this and inspire Skyscanner users.
Skyscanner Version 2 allows customers to select a city or country of departure and choose ‘Everywhere’ as the destination. This gives users a choice of destinations sorted by price, making the app invaluable to those with no fixed travel dates who are looking for inspiration.
Throughout development, emphasis was placed on making the app easy and natural to use. To make it simple to see the cost of flights across a period of time, the app employs a new chart view allowing users to compare prices at a glance. The chart is optimised for the smaller screen size of mobile devices and uses a flexible range of dates which can be changed or expanded up to a year, giving a better chance of finding bargain flights.
Integration with social media is also now available to Skyscanner users, making it simple to search for flights to visit Facebook friends and Linkedin contacts.
The ‘Explore’ feature lets app users plan a journey anywhere, no matter where they are. After choosing a country or city of departure, a fully interactive 3D globe displays prices to destinations around the world. Providing an especially engaging experience for iPad users, the globe can be rotated and and zoomed to see flights to all corners of the earth.
With the first Skyscanner app being so successful, Version 2 had to live up to high expectations. The app has over 3 millions users and has topped the free travel app charts around the world. With a truly global reach, the Skyscanner app has shown the benefits of a carefully designed custom built mobile application and demonstrated a significant return on investment.
