Background

Quality Meat Scotland is a public body which aims to promote high quality Scottish red meat. QMS worked with Kotikan and The Union to create a mobile app for Android and iOS devices.

Brief

The main goal of the app was to help cooks of all ages and abilities get the most from quality Scottish meat. There was a particular focus on reaching a younger generation who are comfortable with modern technology but nervous about cooking a meal from scratch.

'Perfect Steaks and Roasts' was to take users through each step of the cooking process with easy to follow instructions. For those looking for inspiration it would also provide useful ideas and recipes.

Solution

Kotikan collaborated on design with the Union to make using the app simple and enjoyable. In Perfect Steaks and Roasts users can go directly to ‘Get cooking steaks’ or ‘Get cooking roasts’ from the moment the app is launched. These sections allow the cook to select the cut and thickness (or weight for roasts) of their meat and choose how they would like it cooked. The app then customises instructions to suit the piece of meat and cooking preference.

Users are then guided through the cooking process step by step. The app provides tips at each stage to help get great results and includes a timer with alarms to let the user know when it is time to move on to the next step.

When cooking is finished, the app times how long the meat should be left to rest and beeps to let the user know their meal is ready to be enjoyed.

In addition to the ‘Get Cooking’ sections, ‘Perfect Steaks and Roasts’ has a number of other features to ensure it is a useful app for cooks of all abilities. The ‘Touch Test’ guide provides a simple way to tell when steak is cooked to a particular preference. In the ‘Looking for inspiration’ section, users can find information about the different cuts as well as a guide to choosing complementary glazes, marinades and accompaniments to create a perfect meal.
